Your Money

Money Management

Money management, for many, proves an elusive task.

Are you earning good money, but just not sure where it goes? Or maybe every day is a rainy day and dipping into your savings something you’ve made a habit of?

You may have the best intentions, but poor – or worse, no – budgeting, coupled with bad debt, can spell financial catastrophe.

"The sooner you get on top of money management, the better your financial position will be," says Peter Switzer of Switzer Financial Services.

Learn better habits

So, how to you get smart about money management?

Switzer says most people would spend 30 minutes a day reading stuff that doesn’t make them richer, smarter or to have any real competitive advantage over anyone else.

"When it comes to getting richer it’s not something you learn in a day, but you learn it daily," says Switzer.

There are plenty of free resources available online – including podcasts and articles like this one – so why not bookmark them and make a habit of checking in on a daily basis?

Budget beaters

No sane person would throw away money for no reason. But if you don’t have a budget, this exactly what you’re doing.

"I know money doesn't fall out of the sky and many of us have unlucky circumstances but others waste money because they don't budget," says Switzer.

But it’s not all penny-pinching doom and gloom. The Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC)’s consumer website – FIDO – says a budget is the best tool for finding extra money.

Their free budget planner sorts your income and expenses, and calculates your weekly, fortnightly or monthly surplus or deficit.

Get on top of debt

Bad debt is easy to get into.

Instant gratification is a modern day condition, and a wallet full of credit cards can get you into all sorts of financial strife – not to mention when tallied up with your car loan, your home loan and that $100 you owe your big sister.

The best way to tackle bad debt is head on.

But before you do anything – make sure you do the maths.

"Unfortunately, paying back debt is not as much fun as spending the money," says Switzer. "To delay the pain is only human, but if you consolidate your debts and pay them off at a lower rate over a longer time period this can actually cost you more in interest."

So, tally up your debts and the respective interest you’re paying on them.

You can consolidate your loans so you have one weekly, fortnightly or monthly repayment that coincides with your pay cycle.

If you need help, ask for it.

"Look around for great advisers and mentors to make sure you have giants in your life whose shoulders you can stand on so you see stuff that the average person does not see," says Switzer.

These things could be tax advice, financial advice, leadership guidance and personal development tips.

Set goals and work towards them

"Get in control of your life and regularly revisit your goals to motivate you to keep learning and improving," says Switzer.

"Finally, remember, if nothing changes nothing changes!"

Once you’ve these in order, there should be no problem with money management!
