What’s the most social airport?

| More

by Keris Lahiff

As we approach the busy holiday travel rush, Facebook has compiled a list of the world’s most ‘social’ airports. The data was tabulated by analysing how many people shared their location at airports either directly through Facebook or through third-party location services integrated with the social network. The data was collected from the period August 2010 to November 2011.

Sydney International Airport, Kingsford Smith, was the first airport to make the list outside of the US, ranking in at number seven, while Los Angeles International Airport took the crown as most ‘social’ over any other airport in the world. Airports in the US took out 20 of the top 25 most social airports, demonstrating how ingrained social networking has become in the country.

Facebook also found that airport ‘check-ins’ to a social network increased during the annual holiday travel rush. For example, December last year saw check-ins increase 20-fold above the monthly average, with spikes seen on 23, 24, 29-31 December.
