Top four external hard drives to ease the hardware squeeze
by Keris Lahiff
Information is power and, in business, you simply can’t afford to lose any precious data. Avoid tech uh-oh moments with an external hard drive, which allows you to back up all material on a secure drive.
Ranked in no particular order, you can’t go wrong with these hard drives.
1. Seagate GoFlex
The Seagate GoFlex is an extremely portable and reliable device, allowing for data storage up to 1TB (1000GB). It also comes with file management software, including file encryption and backup features, and operates at USB 2.0 transfer speeds.
This is perfect if you’re after a solid and portable backup server. Plus, because it offers automatic and continuous backup of data, it is a reliable means of data storage.
It retails at approximately AU$269.

2. Western Digital My Book Essential
This hard drive offers an easy-to-use interface, including an illuminated capacity gauge showing how much space is available. Its book-like shape means it’s portable, while its 1TB capacity allows it to carry a large amount of data. Plus, the new design lowers energy consumption by 30 per cent – which means less environmental harm and lower electricity bills.
It retails at approximately AU$159.

While less portable than most (at 1.36kg), the Netgear Stora is practical and reliable as a back-up storage solution, offering 1TB of storage space. Automatic back up and the second back-up hard drive take the stress off data security. However, most of the features require internet access so this hard drive is best suited permanently placed in the home office or workplace.
It retails at approximately AU$299.

The Clickfree’s hard drive has one major selling point – its simplicity. Designed to cover the bare minimum, it can back up data without fiddling with settings.
However, due to its simplicity, it does not offer the flexibility of other hard drives. For instance, only documents can be saved, not applications or systems, and it only offers 500GB. If simply in need of easy data back up, it is a no-fuss solution.
It retails at approximately AU$169.

Whether you’re a one-man band or a heavy operator, it is essential to keep your information and data safe and secure. Thankfully, with the number of new devices released (particularly from the companies listed above), there is always a solution to meet your specific tech circumstances. However, be sure to do your research to determine which product is right for you and your business.
