No work and no play make a business unproductive

Even though work is called work, it shouldn’t feel that way. And if your employees aren’t enjoying their role, it could be putting a massive dampener on your business’ productivity.

According to a survey from Leadership Management Australasia (LMA), a staggering 60 per cent of the workforce either hate or are ambivalent towards their job. The L.E.A.D. (Leadership Employment and Direction) Survey for 2011, which has run for 11 years, studies workplace issues and their effect of management and employees.

Grant Sexton, LMA’s managing director, said attitudes towards work is a contributing factor to a decline in Australasian workforce productivity.

“A predominant percentage of the workforce is performing at a level of personal productivity below their capability,” says Sexton. “There are just too many people with a ho-hum attitude, too many just going through the motions and dragging the chain … no wonder we still have 20 per cent of the workforce actively looking for a different role.”

According to the survey, one in six people surveyed hate their jobs and see it only as a means to earn a living. Of the total respondents, 17 per cent of business leaders and senior managers, 15 per cent of middle and frontline managers, and 16 per cent of employees said this was the case.

Continuing with this trend, nearly half (48 per cent) of all leaders and senior managers surveyed reported ambivalence towards their role and actively sought fulfillment in other areas of their life or stated they would prefer to be working in a different role.

Sexton notes that of the factors contributing to leader and senior management dissatisfaction with their roles, there were three standout aspects including:

  • Lack of work/life balance
  • Difficulties associated with finding and retaining staff
  • High staff turnover.

"Organisations need to engage their leaders because they in turn influence the engagement, morale, productivity and commitment of the greater workforce,” says Sexton.

“With Australia facing overall skill and talent shortages for the future, we can’t afford to have such high levels of disengagement and low workplace commitment. Not only are organisations suffering in the area of productivity, they are also still shouldering the added cost of staff turnover.”
