Managing stress – six sure-fire tips to tone down stress

| More

Managing stress is something many business owners don’t have time for. The general consensus is to steamroll through stress, knocking down tasks and pumping away on sheer adrenalin. This might be a suitable tactic in the short-term but eventually exhaustion will catch up.

Don’t burn out. The key to managing stress is time management. Consider this: you may have a to-do list miles long, but you only have 24 hours in the day, two hands and one brain. Certain factors are immutable. Your only option is to maximise what you have, efficiently use your time and avoid overexertion.

To better manage stress, heed these tips for time management:

1. Break down big tasks

Often the catalyst for stress is the overwhelming sense that the task is just too large and intimidating. Nip it in the bud by breaking tasks down into manageable steps. Remember, no one ever climbed Mount Everest in one stride, just one foot in front of the other. And so it is with business.

2. Priotitise tasks

Take your ‘to-do’ list and evaluate the urgency of each of the tasks. Select three tasks that need to be done by the end of the day. Prioritise and number them accordingly. Then break those tasks down into three steps. Now you have something more palatable.

3. Set realistic goals.

If your goals are unmanageable, stress will unlikely hit when they are not fulfilled. Think realistically. How much can you actually achieve within the set timeframe?

4. Go easy on yourself

Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t achieve a goal or task. Negative thoughts create a self-fulfilling prophecy – if you think you will fail, you’re more likely to.

5. Focus on what’s in front of you

Big pictures are for strategising. The smaller picture is for getting things done. No one can get things done by fretting about their entire workload. Focus on each task as it comes or as it is due. Keep an eye on the overall but your focus should be on the present.

6. Relax

Explore relaxation techniques that work for you. Everyone is different. Maybe making a cup of tea will calm those nerves or a stroll during lunch. Whatever it may be, make time for it. Managing stress is managing your body and mind and nothing is more urgent than that!

And remember, even Superman needs a break (Clark Kent is just his ruse for a little R&R from saving the world).
