Get set for New Year resolutions

New Year resolutions not only put us in a positive frame of mind, they actually give rise to mini-booms in self-improvement businesses designed to build egos, muscles and a better way of living and doing business.

But do New Year's resolutions help your business?

“You can say that again,” says Sydney personal trainer, Natasha Stenberg.

“There's definitely a boom after New Year. The resolutions are really good for me,” she says.

But it's not just personal trainers who benefit from the promises made after midnight on 1 January. Dieticians, gyms, personal coaches and business advisers all field a higher level of inquiries as Australians try to put their personal and business lives in order.

Louise Mathieson, of Ferwood Women’s Health Club in Sydney, says January is a “very big month”.

”We don't change our advertising, but it would be one of our busiest months,” she says.

Business coach Michael Sheargold says New Year resolutions aren't restricted to getting in shape and shedding kilos.

“Lots of small businesses actually plan on a calendar year basis,” he says. “Christmas and the holidays are a natural marker for anyone running a business.”

Though this can be a quiet time for many services businesses, it is a good time for business planning.

“As of next week, I'm on the road for four weeks,” he says. “We call it a kick-start, where I visit clients so they can recommit to goals for the year.”

Sheargold nominated what he thought were the top five New Year resolutions for small business owners.

“Growing their business or sales is number one, followed by boosting profits,” he says.

Next comes improving client services.

“Getting their act together, which really means implementing better quality systems is the fourth and putting more balance into their working life is the next most popular goal.”

But how long does the resolution effect last?

Mathieson said gym membership went up for three months, but tailed off as “life and work get in the way”.

Stenberg also said enthusiasm lasts about three months, but she tries to stretch it out.

“I do testing to show how they've improved and if they have a lay-off, I test them again to show what they've lost,” she says.
