Just do it

Jules Hall is the founder and managing partner of one of Australia’s most successful advertising agencies, The Hallway.

I never thought I'd…

Have a real job. I spent my uni days running a fashion label with a mate, and I was going to do it forever. It was pre-social media days but we built the brand on the same basis. Except in those days, socializing happened in the pub, not on the internet. So that’s where we built our business – over beers with friends, and friends of friends, and friends of friends of friends. Then we left uni and things changed.
This all started when…

We persuaded Jameson Irish Whiskey to sponsor our sailing back in 2001. We won some big events, we got some great media coverage and we went to lots of parties, where there was lots of Jameson. Fast forward a few years, I had grown up (a bit) and I’d got a real job (sadly). By this stage I worked in advertising. Jameson were still sponsoring my sailing, then one day they said they wanted me to take on their advertising account. That was the day I won my first client and made the decision to open my advertising agency.
The best thing about doing what I do is…

I definitely have a ‘real job’ these days, but it's so much goddam fun that you can’t really call it a job. It's a constant whirlwind of intellectual stimulation, creative fulfilment and brilliant interactions with brilliant people.
The hardest thing about doing what I do is…

Remembering it’s just advertising.  We get so emotionally involved in everything we do, that you’d have thought we were saving the world. But I like it that way. I want to enjoy my work and I want to care.
I wish someone had told me…

Well, someone did tell me. They told me I could do it. That I could get on and run my own agency. That brilliant person was my wife.
The best advice I was ever given was…

If I could do it all over again, I'd…

I wouldn't change a single thing.
