ASX 200 over 5000

Australian shares were higher at midday with the S&P/ASX 200 over 5000, following gains on Wall St overnight.

The S&P/ASX 200 gained 20.9 points or 0.42 per cent to 5015.6.

The All Ords was 21.7 points or 0.43 per cent higher to 5039.6.

Among the major miners, BHP Billiton rose $0.26 or 0.59 per cent to $44.25 and Rio Tinto was $0.95 or 1.19 per cent higher to $81.05.

Macarthur Coal’s board advised shareholders to “take no action” on the revised proposal from New Hope. At 12:13pm, Macarthur shares were $0.22 or 1.4 per cent higher to $15.72 and New Hope shares were up $0.18 or 3.5 per cent to $5.33 at 12:11pm.

In financials, Westpac added $0.18 or 0.64 per cent to $28.38, NAB put on $0.31 or 0.64 per cent to $28.24, ANZ was $0.21 or 0.81 per cent higher to $26.12 and CBA rose $0.21 or 0.35 per cent to $59.43.

In gold mining, Oz Minerals upgraded its gold production guidance, saying it expects between 110,000 to 120,000 ounces per annum for the 2010 to 2012 period. Shares rose $0.05 or 4.1 per cent to $1.27.

Lihir Gold lost $0.02 or 0.51 per cent to $3.91 and Newcrest Mining was $0.21 or 0.61 per cent lower to $34.02.

In energy, Woodside Petroleum gained $0.86 or 1.84 per cent to $47.71 and Santos was unchanged at $14.80.

And among the retailers, Woolworths lost $0.19 or 0.69 per cent to $27.54 and Wesfarmers rose $0.02 or 0.06 per cent to $32.72.

To Asia, and the Nikkei rose 87.7 points or 0.78 per cent to 11,292.6 and the Hang Seng was 138 points or 0.62 per cent higher to 22,259.5.

The Australian dollar was buying 93.55 US cents, 60.36 pence Sterling, 68.52 Euro cents and 87.38 Japanese yen.
