All Ords closes over 5000-mark

Australian shares finished the day higher with the All Ords closing over 5000.

The S&P/ASX 200 added 36.2 points or 0.73 per cent to 4984.3.

The All Ords gained 38.7 points or 0.78 per cent to 5011.6.

Among the major miners today, BHP Billiton rose $0.55 or 1.25 per cent to $44.45 and Rio Tinto gained $1.19 or 1.5 per cent to $80.66.

In financials, CBA put on $0.26 or 0.45 per cent to $58.40, ANZ added $0.21 or 0.83 per cent to $25.36, Westpac was $0.12 or 0.43 per cent higher to $27.84 and NAB rose $0.05 or 0.18 per cent to $27.65. Macquarie Group was up $0.08 or 0.16 per cent to $49.46. Suncorp-Metway finished the day $0.02 or 0.23 per cent higher to $8.78.

To the gold miners, and Lihir Gold fell $0.01 or 0.25 per cent to $3.98 and Newcrest Mining took off $0.70 or 1.96 per cent to $34.93.

In energy, Woodside Petroleum added $0.27 or 0.57 per cent to $47.77, Santos gained $0.04 or 0.27 per cent to $14.92 and Oil Search was $0.02 or 0.3 per cent hight to $6.03.

And in retail, Woolworths dropped $0.24 or 0.84 per cent to $28.28 and Wesfarmers added $0.47 or 1.47 per cent to $32.37.

In news, the number of dwelling commitments for owner-occupied housing fell by 1.8 per cent, seasonally adjusted, in February, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Around Asia, and the Nikkei was 47.6 points or 0.42 per cent higher to 11,251.9 and the Hang Seng was up 34.8 points or 0.16 per cent to 22,243.3.

The Australian dollar was buying 93.14 US cents, 60.31 pence Sterling, 68.29 Euro cents and 86.87 Japanese yen.
