5 things you need to know today

  • Amazon could be trading in Australia within 48 hours with the Amazon Marketplace team sending an email to sellers on Tuesday afternoon saying they will begin a testing phase on Thursday. The email says sellers should "prepare for the launch of the Amazon Marketplace in Australia" and the company "will start an internal testing phase with a small number of customers" at that point. "As your products will be able to be purchased, please make sure your pricing and stock is up-to-date," the Amazon Marketplace team's email says.
  • Reserve Bank of Australia governor Philip Lowe said in a speech last night that while the next move in official interest rates is more likely to be up than down, there were still too many people out of work and inflation is set to remain below his 2-3% target through 2019. (See analysis by Peter Switzer and David Bassanese today.)
  • The head of national employers' group the Australian Industry Group, Innes Willox, has said there needs to be a national effort to get the long-term unemployed back to work. There are now more long-term unemployed than during the GFC and almost 25% of jobless have been out of work for more than a year, according to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. "As a nation we can do more when it comes to retraining, reskilling, re-energising those people who are long-term unemployed," Willox said.
  • Specialty Fashion -  owner of brands Millers, Katies and Rivers -  says it will close over 300 loss-making stores. A majority of shareholders (51%) voted against the group's remuneration report at its annual meeting on Tuesday – twice the amount required to register a "first strike" that will put the board at risk of being spilt if there is a protest vote again next year.
