1. The Coalition has narrowed its gap with Labor in the two-party-preferred vote according to the latest Ipsos poll published by the AFR, with the govermnent improving 3 percentage points to 49% and Labor on 51%.

2. Trade talks between China and the US will continue in Washington this week, with President Xi Jinping reportedly saying that discussions in Beijing last week "achieved important progress".

3. The Dow Jones closed up 1.33% on Friday and ended its eighth consecutive week of rises, while the S&P 500 rose 1.09% and the Nasdaq gained 0.61%. US markets will be closed on Monday for the Presidents Day Federal Holiday.

4. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has confirmed that the government will support a motion calling for a disability royal commission.

5. Ahead of the New South Wales election in less than five weeks, a poll from Essential puts Labor just ahead of the Coalition in the two-party-preferred ahead, 51% to 49%.
