1. The Morrison government has struck a deal with the Greens to pass its changes to super in the Senate that Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said would "consolidate low-balance accounts, reuniting three million Australians with $6bn of their own superannuation".

2. President Donald Trump will sign a government funding bill that will prevent another government shutdown, and will also declare a national emergency "to ensure we stop the national security and humanitarian crisis at the border" according to White House press secratary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

3. The Commerce Department in the US said that retail sales fell 1.2% in December, the biggest drop since September 2009. 

4. Both the Dow Jones and the S&P 500 dropped overnight, falling 0.41% and 0.27%, respectively. The Nasdaq rose by 0.09% to reach a five-day winning streak.

5. UK prime minister Theresa May's Brexit plan B has been defeated in the House of Commons, with MPs voting 303 to 258 to reject the motion. The UK is scheduled to leave the EU on the 29th of March.
