1. Labor has maintained its lead in the two-party-preferred vote in The Australian's Newspoll, with a vote of 53 to 47 against the Coalition. Scott Morrison remains the preferred PM, gaining two points on Bill Shorten to currently stand on 44 to 35.

2. The first public hearings in the aged care royal commission will begin in Adelaide today.

3. US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will head to Beijing later this week for trade discussions with Chinese officials.

4. The Dow Jones closed down 0.25% on Friday, with three consecutive days of losses for the first time since December. Both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq had minor gains of around 0.1%.

5. Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney has told US media that the possibility of another government shutdown cannot be ruled out if a deal has not been made for Donald Trump's border wall by Friday.
