3. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will block President Trump from delivering the annual State of the Union address in the House of Representatives until the partial government shutdown is over. Trump has vowed to hold an "alternative" event.

4. The Dow lifted by 0.7% overnight as fourth-quarter earnings season continues in the US, while the S&P 500 rose by 0.2% and the Nasdaq gained 0.08%.
