1. Theresa May has survived a no-confidence vote in British parliament, with the House of Commons defeating the vote by 325 votes to 306.

2. China has questioned acting Foreign Minister Simon Birmingham's comments against the death penalty for Canadian drug smuggler Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, with foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying commenting "Does the Australian side wish to see this large batch of drugs arrive in its land and endanger its people?"

3. The Dow Jones rose by 0.59% overnight following a 9.54% surge in Goldman Sachs stocks and a 7.16% rise for Bank of America after both reported strong earnings from the previous quarter. The S&P 500 lifted 0.22% and the Nasdaq moved 0.15% higher.

4. Retail foot traffic fell by 15% and 23% during the final two weeks of 2018 according to Shoppertrak data highlighted by The Australian. Read more in Peter Switzer's story.

5. With the heatwave continuing, parts of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia are expected to reach temperatures in the mid to high 40s today.
