1. Following the Republican party's loss of the House of Representatives to the Democrats in the midterm elections, President Donald Trump has criticised a number of Republican candidates who distanced themselves from him, as well as the "very hostile media coverage".

2. Trump has fired attorney general Jeff Sessions, telling the President in a letter, "At your request, I am submitting my resignation". Matthew Whitaker, who served as chief of staff to the attorney general and has previously said that Robert Mueller's investigation into the Trump administration could be a "witch hunt", is now acting attorney general.

3. The major benchmarks in the US were higher following the midterm elections, with the Dow Jones, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq all rising over 2%.

4. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has pledged $3 billion towards infrastructure projects in the Pacific ahead of the APEC Summit next week.

5. 'Single-use' has been named the word of the year for 2018 according to Collins Dictionary.
