1. The former Australian ambassador to Israel, Dave Sharma, has been selected as the Liberal Party candidate for the Wentworth by-election next month. Prime Minister Scott Morrison had been pushing for a female candidate to run for the seat.

3. China has welcomed an invitation by the United States to resume trade talks, boosting Chinese tech stocks including JD.com, Baidu.com and Alibaba. President Donald Trumps said in a tweet that the US is "under no pressure to make a deal with China".

4. High winds from Hurricane Florence have begun hitting the US, with "catastrophic flash flooding" expected to hit North and South Carolina according to the US National Hurricane Center.
